Mark McGranaghan, Vice President, Electric Power Research Institute and EPRI Fellow

Mark McGranaghan is Vice President of Innovation at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). This involves coordinating across the EPRI research sectors in areas of Technology Innovation as well as developing and implementing strategy for international coordination around all areas of innovation. Important areas of focus include EPRI’s public Thought Leadership presence, government research coordination and new technology demonstrations and challenges. He has authored more than 70 technical papers and articles on topics ranging from power quality to insulation coordination of extra high- voltage (EHV) systems.

His is an IEEE Fellow and in 2014 received the Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award for his expertise and dedication to power engineering standards development. He is a co- author of the book, Electrical Power Systems Quality, now in its third edition, the premier textbook on power quality and compatibility since its initial release in 1996. He is a member of the executive committee of the CIGRE U.S. National Committee and Vice Chairman of the CIRED U.S. National Committee. Mark has been with EPRI since 2003. He led EPRI research in the smart grid area and coordinated closely with government smart grid demonstrations and other efforts around the world. Prior to joining EPRI, McGranaghan was Vice President at Electrotek Concepts (1988-2003) and a Manager at McGraw-Edison/Cooper Power in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania (1978-1988). Mark has Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Toledo. He has a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Reena Suri, Executive Director, ISGF

Reena Suri, Executive Director with India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) since 2013, brings over 19 years of experience in the Energy Sector. She is responsible for the research projects, advisory services, business development, training and capacity building programs, customer outreach activities, member’s relations and finances of ISGF. Reena has contributed to the various advisory services, whitepapers and research reports of ISGF such as: Implementation Plan for Electrification of Public Transportation in Kolkata City; Smart Grid Handbook for Regulators and other Stakeholder; Blockchain for Electric Utilities; Energy Storage Roadmap for India; Smart Grid Roadmap for Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd; Development of Roadmap for Implementation of Smart Grid – Concepts, Practices and Technologies in SAARC Region; Study on Infrastructure and Enabling Environment for Road Electric Transport in SAARC Member States; and World Bank EV Project: EV Ecosystem Support for Kolkata.

Reena is the founder-editor of the Smart Grid Bulletin published by ISGF since January 2014 which has online circulation of over 50,000 senior professionals in 100+ countries. As an outreach specialist, she has been involved in development of the Customer Outreach programs for the utilities implementing the Smart Grid projects in India. The outreach program helps the utilities to educate the project benefits to the customers well in advance of the start of project implementation. Reena is also responsible for designing and delivering training and capacity building programs on various domains of Smart Grids for Policy Makers, Regulators and Utility Officials. Reena is instrumental in making the India Smart Grid Knowledge Portal (www.indiasmartgrid.org), one of the most popular portals on smart grids globally.

Reena has worked with ISGF Board to conceive, design, develop and the successful delivery of ISGF’s Annual Event, India Smart Utility Week (ISUW, www.isuw.in) since 2015. She is the principal show director of ISUW which in a short span has grown to be the signature event on Smart Grids and Smart Cities around the world.

Vikas Kashyap, Advisor, ISGF

Vikas Kashyap is Founder and Director of Lead ventures Limited, which is an independent consultancy on Technology & Business Transformation for companies in the utilities and Smart Cities space.

Vikas has extensive domain experience with Utilities, Energy management and Smarts (Homes / Grids /metering / lighting / IOT) across many geographies spanning over 32 years. Vikas has been associated with some specific AMI / SMART meters / Smart city / Prepayment projects like Tata power Mumbai, Mysore (Karnataka), Meerut (UP), UGVCL, Beijing China, Accra Ghana, UK Smart meter roll out for electricity & Gas, UK Smart Heat & Electricity metering. Previously Vikas has held the positions of VP at Cyan Connode UK. Cyan Connode is active in the field of Last mile mesh radio technology and service platform for Smart Metering / Grid, Lighting and IOT. Before that Vikas was Director of Sales - C&I, at Secure Meters UK. He is responsible for all its functions and the strategic growth of the Secure Meters group in Commercial & Industrial space in UK and the field of Energy conservation, pump efficiency monitoring, consultancy & solutions and Smart Homes – worldwide. Vikas joined Secure Group in the year 1995 and has held various positions in sales & marketing, product management, Project management, services business related to Metering, Revenue management & Energy efficiency projects. He started his career in 1987 and has earlier worked for English Electric and Siemens Ltd. Vikas is a Graduate in Electrical Engineering and has Masters’ Degree in Business Economics and Export marketing.

Ajoy Rajani, Chair of ISGF Working Group on IOT, Smart Metering, AI and Analytics, ISGF

Ajoy Rajani has been a technology disrupter in the IoT and Smart Grid space for the past 18 years – he pioneered Automatic Meter Reading and Smart Meters in India and enjoys introducing disruptive products into established markets. He has been helping companies and planners use IOT technologies to help solve today’s biggest challenges in energy management, public safety, intelligent traffic and transportation to name a few. Given his intimate and long involvement in the industry he plays a significant role in helping companies invest and explore partnerships & markets in India & abroad.

Some of his notable achievements are: He devised the unique architecture for CDMA telemetry for which he was awarded the Global 3G industry award. This paved the way for IOT using CDMA. His individual efforts at Reliance Communications led to the reduction in the cost of handsets and other devices by over 100% of the then established prices. He provided leadership for all technology initiatives as Group Head, Digital Initiatives & Automation for Adani Electricity Mumbai. He formulated the digital roadmap for the group’s energy vertical and the adoption of technologies for an intelligent organisation, including adoption of Smart Grids, Electric Vehicles, and Artificial Intelligence. At Reliance ADAG, Ajoy Rajani was the Group Head of Technology & Innovation, he also lead the Smart Grid & IoT initiatives with oversight over major initiatives including Smart meters, Auto Demand Response, Consumer Engagement, Wireless Network for Smart City Applications etc. He delivered new focus on innovation across Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Block Chain, Virtual and Mixed Reality. Presently, he is on the board of several entities in India and abroad including the India Smart Grid Forum (New Delhi, India), advisor to the board of Smart Energy Water (Irvine, California) and was formerly on the board of CDMA Development Group. (San Diego, California).

Reji Kumar Pillai, President - India Smart Grid Forum, Chairman – Global Smart Grid Federation

Reji is the President of India Smart Grid Forum (www.indiasmartgrid.org) since its inception in 2011 and is also the Chairman of Global Smart Grid Federation since November 2016. He an internationally renowned expert with nearly four decades of experience in the electricity sector in diverse functions covering the entire value chain and across continents. He is spearheading a mission to leverage technology to transform the electric grid in India and provide clean and reliable electricity to every citizen 24x7 at affordable cost. He is actively advocating for the “Right to Electricity Act” that will ensure lifeline supply of electricity to all citizens in India. Reji has played pivotal role in several ground breaking initiatives related to renewable energy, electric grid modernization, electric mobility, energy storage and digitalization in India during the past two decades. His current areas of research and work include: Grid Integrated Vehicles, District Cooling, Electric Cooking, Smart Grids as Anchor Infrastructure for Smart Cities, Grid Interactive Buildings and Campuses; Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Blockchain Applications for Utilities; Urban Air Mobility (UAM) Systems and the Future of Transportation; and Interconnection of Regional Grids in Asia - ASEAN, SAARC and GCC grids.

In November 2016, Reji was unanimously elected as Chairman of Global Smart Grid Federation, now renamed as Global Smart Energy Federation (GSEF), a global umbrella organization of smart grid/energy associations and utilities from 16 countries and the European Union; and headquartered in Washington DC, USA. As an entrepreneur, Reji has built successful enterprises in India and overseas and exited them. He has studied Engineering, Finance, Management and Law; worked with NTPC and IBM and has been senior consultant with ADB, World Bank and USAID. A recognized thought leader in clean energy, smart grid technologies, smart cities and electric mobility, Reji is a popular key-note speaker at international symposiums and conferences on these domains. He has also contributed to several articles, books, research reports and white papers on variety of topics.

Vinod Tiwari, Global Head of Business Development and Sales, Power Ledger

Based in Perth, Western Australia, Vinod leads Power Ledger’s global Business Deve lopment and Sales teams. Vinod is leveraging his many years working within the energy sector with Perth Energy, Future Effect and Regen Power to connect with client stakeholders and formulate global partnerships and alliances across power and business domains, as well as across various third party providers in Australia and overseas markets to support the delivery of Power Ledger’s blockchain offerings for energy trading, renewable energy certificates trading and renewable asset financing. Vinod has over 25 years of experience in operations, developing strategic partnerships, new markets and providing leadership in senior sales and business development roles within the renewable energy and other engineering industries. He has a successful track record of building and defending market share, expanding product lines, developing renewable portfolio and developing and executing long term strategies to achieve challenging sales targets and influencing key stakeholders at board and senior management levels. Most recently, Vinod was General Manager Sales at Perth Energy (2007 – 2016) with responsibility for all gas and electricity sales. In this role, Vinod successfully grew the energy sales portfolio from $20 million annual turnover to more than $300 million. Previous roles include managing engineering, technical sales and business development for General Electric Company’s joint venture with Wipro in India. Vinod holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Australia. He also participated at the Executive Leadership Program at University of California, Berkley, USA

RP Singh, Chairman, UPERC

Shri Raj Pratap Singh took charge as Chairman of UPERC on 2nd July 2018. Shri Raj Pratap Singh Joined Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in Aug. 1983 (Uttar Pradesh cadre). Sh. Singh has dealt with policy formulation, budgeting, implementation, monitoring & coordination, personnel management and service delivery aspects of Public Administration at the state govt. (21 years) & central govt. (6 years) levels in India. In addition, Sh. Singh has worked as Sr. Advisor for 3 years in a multilateral development institution (World Bank) at the Board level at Washington DC. At the highest levels of decision making, Sh. Singh has been responsible for converting governments/
institution’s mandate into viable Policies/ Programs & Projects with effective delivery mechanism. He has been Chief / Dy. Chief in government departments, autonomous bodies, Public Sector Undertakings for developmental, regulatory and resource mobilization functions. In these assignments, Sh. Singh has effectively brought transparency & good governance in decision-making and execution, prudent financial management and anti-corruption measures. Sh. Raj Pratap Singh represented Indian Chair in International Development Agency (IDA)- 14 & IDA-15 replenishment meetings. He has visited around 31 countries as member of Indian Prime Minister’s official / Indian delegation including USA, UK, Russia, Japan, France, Germany, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Maldives, Denmark, Syria, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Switzerland, Nigeria, Laos, Macau etc. Sh. Namrata Mukherjee, Deputy CoP, Trade and Investment, SAREP (RTI India)

Namrata has several years of experience across policy and regulatory affairs in the power sector, commercial and market related aspects of (a) Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, (b) Renewable Energy including solar, wind, small hydro and biomass technologies (c) Energy Efficiency and (d) Climate Change. Her areas of expertise include: Electricity Sector – Competition, Regulation and Reforms including Tariff Setting - South Asia and South East Asia; Renewable Energy based Electricity Generation – Policy and Regulatory Aspects including Tariffs,Quotas and Green Certificate Mechanisms: Europe, USA, and South East Asia Country Experience; CDM and Climate Policy – Kyoto Mechanisms, UNFCCC Methodologies, PDD Writing, Carbon Markets including knowledge on EU-ETS, Joint Implementation and other Climate change related regulatory and policy issues; Energy and Environment Management – Policy Analysis, Energy Efficiency Measures in SMIs, Low Carbon Technologies including waste to energy projects, Economic and Financial Analysis, ISO 14001 Practices, Corporate Social Responsibility, Sustainability Reporting - GRI G4 Standards. Killian McKenna, Senior Researcher, Electrical Engineer and Principal Investigator, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Dr. Killian McKenna is a senior researcher, electrical engineer and principal investigator at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). NREL is the Department of Energy’s primary laboratory for energy efficiency and renewable energy research and development, operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy. Dr. McKenna is an R&D 100 Award winning researcher (NREL’s Pre-Configuring Inverter Set-Points interconnection tool) and leads projects in the area of distributed energy resources, characterizing and testing energy storage (lithium-ion and flow batteries), modelling behind-the-meter flexible demand (e.g. NREL’s Object-Oriented Controllable High-Resolution Residential Energy Model) and distribution networks. Dr. McKenna leads a research portfolio with projects on the performance and integration of distributed energy resources (DER) to the grid, with an emphasis on behind-the-meter customer resources. At NREL Dr McKenna has worked with a range of partners including Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO), National Grid (NG), Centrica Business Solutions, and Utilidata among others, and in India with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (TANGEDCO) and BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL). Dr. McKenna holds both a PhD and Bachelors (Hons.) Degree from University College Dublin, Ireland, in electrical engineering.

PK Pujari, Chairman, CERC

A Post Graduate in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, Shri P.K. Pujari joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the premier civil service of India in 1981 and was allotted Gujarat cadre. During his career, he handled assignments in various departments/ministries in Gujarat as well as Central Government, such as power, commercial taxes, finance and industries. He was Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Power for more than two years before his superannuation in 2017, after serving for 36 years. Some of the key assignments in the field of finance and industries were (i) financial resource forecast, expenditure planning, annual budget preparation, debt and guarantee management; (ii) transition from sales tax to value addition tax (VAT), administration of commercial taxes by simplifying processes and making it enabled; and (iii) Setting up and marketing industrial estates and special economic zones. He worked in the power sector for more than seven years, as Director and Secretary. As Director he was involved in developing policy framework for participation of private power utilities in generation and distribution. During his tenure as Secretary (2015-17), maximum generation capacity and inter-state transmission capacity was added in the country, resulting in one nation – one grid – one price. As Secretary, he initiated and concluded a number of far reaching initiatives and policy changes. These include electrification of all the remaining 18,452 villages (as on 1.4.2015), launching of “UDAY” for sustainable operational and financial turnaround of discoms, revised Tariff Policy 2016, new coal linkage policy for power plants, revised National Electricity Plan, XIX electricity power survey, revised- bid documents for UMPPs, revised power allocation formula for states from cg stations, formulation of new hydro-power policy, formulation of the new policy for universal households electrification by 2019, policy guidelines for integration of renewable energy into the grid, revised rules for captive generators, finalisation of the report for rationalisation of tariff structure and tariff categories. During his tenure, the guidelines for cross border trade of power with neighbouring countries got finalised. The cross border transmission lines also got augmented substantially. This facilitated increased trade of power with Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Power trade with Myanmar started for the first time. Talks started for sub-marine cable connection with Srilanka. He led the Indian side for the bilateral talks on power trade with these countries. He was closely associated with the signing of the International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement during COP22 in Marrakech. He led the Indian delegation for the 2nd BRICS Energy Ministerial Summit and also for the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Summit at Beijing. His interests include reading books, sports and listening to music. He has been appointed Chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission in February 2018.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar Banga, President – Transmission and Distribution, Tata Power, Mumbai, India

Mr. Banga presently heads the Transmission and Distribution Vertical at Tata Power which includes the Distribution services across Mumbai, Delhi, Ajmer, Power Trading Business and Transmission Business in Mumbai and Powerlinks Transmission. In a recent addition to Tata Power’s Kitty, Mr. Banga also oversees the recently acquired Distribution companies in Odisha – CESU, SOUTHCO, WESCO and NESCO. Prior to this, he led the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power-DDL), a Public Private Partnership (JV) of TATA Power and Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi as the Chief Executive Officer. A power sector veteran with around three decades of experience in Power Generation and Distribution business, Mr. Sanjay Kumar Banga brings with him an expertise in the power sector, covering areas of Operational Technologies, Project Management, Utility Business process Re- engineering and Regulatory Environment that are essential for strengthening of electrical utilities to meet reliability and AT&C loss reduction targets under regulatory regime. The learning he gathered through associations with leading Public and Private sector electrical utilities in India equips him very well to tackle the enormous challenges of the electricity distribution business in India and abroad. His deep knowledge of the subject makes him a regular speaker in seminars / workshops / panel discussions in India and geographies around the world. Mr. Banga started his career with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) as an Engineer Trainee and was involved in the Operation & Commissioning of Super Thermal Power Projects (1989 to 1995). Prior to joining Tata Power (DDL), he has worked with Reliance Energy (earlier known as BSES Ltd) from 1996 to 2003, where he was associated with the entire spectrum of generation activities covering wide aspects of Operations, Maintenance, Planning, Design and Project Engineering. Mr. Banga is an alumnus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra. He has his Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the esteemed Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi. Also, he has completed the Senior Executive Leadership Program from the most coveted Harvard Business School. He is a member of the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) LITD10 core committee for defining standards for Power System Control and Communication. Mr. Banga is an avid reader and enjoys playing sports like Tennis and Cricket.

DV Shastri, ED, Natural Gas Society

Mr. D V Shastry is an astute professional leader with 36+ years of multifarious experience in Natural Gas Industry, encompassing its Technical and Managerial aspects such as Project Management, Operations & Maintenance of Natural Gas Pipelines and Gas Processing Plants, Learning & Development, HR/HRD and Administration. He is among the founder members of GAIL (a Maharatna PSU). Apart from performing roles in Project Management and Operation & Maintenance of Pipelines and Natural Gas Processing plants, he was holding the position of Executive Director (Training, R&D and Start-Up) in GAIL (India) Ltd at the time of superannuation. He is also the former Director on the board of M/s GAIL Gas Ltd and former Director (Personnel), Electronics Corporation of India (ECIL) – a CPSE under Department of Atomic Energy. His academic qualifications include a graduate degree in Mechanical Engg.- VU with M.Tech. in Energy Systems Engg. – IIT Bombay, Diploma in Management – IGNOU and Advanced Certification in HRM [ACHRM] – AIMA. He had been supporting the Business Development of GAIL through capability building – especially in the new/upcoming areas and has been instrumental in conceptualization and implementation of various Knowledge Management initiatives – such as launch of ASME (USA) certification courses in pipeline/asset integrity management, organizing International Workshop on City Gas Distribution & CNG (CGD & CNG) for the participants from SAARC Countries and has been a part of organizing team of Asia Gas Partnership Summits (AGPS), held in the past. He also organized many similar events at GAIL Training Institute, in addition to structured training interventions to support business needs of various other organizations including IOCL, HPCL, MRPL(ONGC), GSPC, Torrent, ThinkGas and the Joint Venture Companies (JVCs) of GAIL, etc.

Sandeep Bangia, Head - EV, HA and ESCO, Tata Power Company Limited

Sandeep combines his understanding of emerging technologies & digital platforms, experience in telecom and mobility space and his passion towards clean mobility to drive innovative solutions in the EV charging ecosystem. He’s an Electrical Engineer from our very own VJTI Mumbai – Class of 1993. He then went on to do an MBA from NMIMS, Mumbai University. He has completed programs on Digital Marketing from Univ of Illinios & Blockchain from INSEAD, Singapore. Starting with consumer durables for Carrier Aircon he spent a large part of his career in telecom for marquee organizations like Tata Teleservices, Reliance, and Idea Cellular (now Vodafone Idea) working across the spectrum with Product Management, Business operations, Business Strategy, Value Added Services, Digital platforms and similar. He has dabbled with entrepreneurship and start-up ideas in the EV and Consumer IOT domain for a while before joining TATA Power leading these very verticals. Off work, he writes about any topic close to his heart –Electric Mobility, Blockchain, AI, Customer Centricity and similar. His writings can be seen on ET Brand Equity, Hindu Business Line, Free Press Journal, Business Standard and such. He is an avid outdoors person and indulges in endurance running, cycling & Swimming. Over 2 dozen half marathons and a couple of triathlons under his belt, he wanted to do an Ironman 70.3 in 2020 which may now have to wait. In his free time, he cooks for his daughters.
